Bulldogs face Cougars for third time during the 2018-19 year
SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Gonzaga men's rowing team will begin their spring season Saturday, Feb. 9 in an Erg Dual indoor race against Washington State University. The race is set to begin a 9 a.m. at the Harry A. Green Indoor Rowing Facility inside the McCarthey Athletic Center.
The dual will open with the first flights; depending on the number of participants, there will be either three or four flights starting at 9 a.m. Subsequent flights will begin 15 minutes following the previous at 9:15, 9:30 and 9:45 if applicable, with each flight being 2000 meters long. Real-time representation of each race will be broadcast on three televisions at the front of the facility.
Following the conclusion of the opening flights, there will be a single 500-meter coxswain race.
Once the results from the earlier flights are finalized, the rowers will be reorganized from the fastest time to the slowest time for each school and divided into three finals for races of 1500 meters. The first final will begin at 11 am, with the second at 11:15, and the last race at 11:30/11:45.
Spectators are welcome and encouraged to attend. They can enter through the ticket office at the McCarthey Athletic Center and follow the signs to the Harry A. Green Indoor Rowing Facility.
"This is always a great event for us," Gonzaga men's rowing head coach Dan Gehn said. "Racing against WSU really breaks up the winter training and gives a measure of where we are with our physiology. The guys love how loud the room gets with everyone cheering and closeness of the spectators."
The Zags faced the Cougars twice this past fall, first at the Head of Spokane on Oct. 13 and again at the Head of the Snake on Oct. 20. In their first meeting, Gonzaga's first and second varsity eight boats defeated the Cougars by a combined 13 seconds. A week later at the Head of the Snake, the Zags continued this success with three wins, one in Flight 1 and another in Flight 2 while GU's Second Varsity 4 claimed a 22-second win over the Cougars.
