Zags in 14th as a team after first round
BANDON, Ore. – The Gonzaga men's golf team is in 14th place after the first round of the 10th annual Bandon Dunes Championships. The Zags are 22-over (310) entering the second round on the Bandon Dunes Course.
Charlie Magruder led GU on Day 1. He carded a 74 (+2) in the first round, making four birdies and eight pars. Nick Nolan is tied for 22nd at three-over (75), after making five birdies. He went three-under (3.70) on the course's Par-4 holes.
Holden Backes (+8, 80) and Chris Mogg (+9, 81) are tied for 79th and 85th. Matthew Ruel (T100th) was 13-over (85) in Round 1.
Four Bulldogs are playing as individuals. Tyler Munetake is tied for 37th at four-over (76). He made 12 pars in Round 1. Grant Johnson is six-over (78) in a tie for 61st. Brentt Salas (+9, 81) and Cameron Nicklos (+12, 84) are tied for 85th and 98th.
Ohio State's Daniel Wetterich tops the leaderboard at three-under (69). The Buckeyes also lead the team leaderboard. OSU was three-over (291) as a team Sunday.
"We got off to a great start, getting to three-under thru seven holes and in second place," GU Head Coach Robert Gray said. "There was a bit of a breeze during those holes but then the wind really picked up and blew a steady 25 with gusts to 30+. The added wind really put us on our heels for those final holes and we dropped a lot of shots. We had a lot of double bogeys on our second nine holes and the par 5's really hurt us, playing them seven-over for our counting four players. However, we had a lot of positive things happen with our start and fighting thru the tough weather. Scores throughout the field really show how hard it played with no team breaking par and just two individuals breaking par in a strong field. Tomorrow the wind will likely be up again but we understand how to deal with it better.
"Charlie played really solid all day with just a couple of bogeys down the stretch on difficult holes. Nick also posted a good round, especially being his first of the season and in those conditions. Really, we're getting a lot closer and there's a lot of positives going on with this group. The field is really bunched up and we're just 11 shots out of 3rd place. We'll get back at it tomorrow and do our best to get all the pieces to fall into place."
Round 2 begins at 8:30 a.m. Monday. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com.
