Bulldogs top Washington State in every race Saturday morning

PULLMAN, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's rowing team topped Washington State in every race in the 30th annual Fawley Cup Saturday morning at Wawawai Landing on the Snake River in Pullman, Wash. The Bulldogs have now swept the Cougars in the Fawley Cup each of the last four seasons.

"It was a good effort by our guys today into the current and with a light headwind," head men's rowing coach Dan Gehn said.

Gonzaga's varsity eight edged Washington State in the closest race of the day, topping the Cougars by just over a second with a time of 6:19.4.

"WSU's Varsity 8 raced us well today," Gehn said. "They got the better of us in the first 500, but I was really pleased with the poise and patience of our guys. They worked their way back through the middle 1,000 and controlled the race in the last 500 to win it."

The Bulldogs' third varsity eight posted the biggest win of the day, defeating the Cougars by over 26 seconds finishing with a time of 6:50.1. The Zags second varsity eight claimed a 14-second win with a time of 6:33.3, while Gonzaga's novice eight took a three-second victory with a time of 6:44.3.
