CHANDLER, Ariz. – Gonzaga's Tyler Munetake tied for 25th at two-under (214) at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic on the Cattail Course at the Whirlwind Golf Club.
Munetake carded a 72 (E) in the third and final round Tuesday. He made 14 pars and two birdies in Round 3. He finished the tournament making 38 pars. The senior led the 120-golfer field finishing three-under on the course's Par-3 holes, averaging 2.75 on those holes.
Gonzaga placed 15th as a team at 15-over (882). The Zags were seven-over (295) in the final round. GU had a team total of 293 (+5) in Round 1, 294 (+6) in Round 2 and 295 (+7) in Round 3.
Chris Mogg and Nick Nolan were five-over (221) and seven-over (223) in the tournament. Mogg tied for 60th and Nolan tied for 72nd. Mogg made four birdies Tuesday, finishing even-par (72) in the final round. Nolan made 13 pars in Round 3, and was three-over (75).
Grant Johnson and Matthew Ruel both made three birdies in the final round. Johnson was four-over (76) in Round 3, while Ruel was six-over (78). Johnson finished the tournament 11-over (227) and Ruel was 14-over (230).
"The course played more difficult today with tougher hole locations and some wind that kicked up on the finals holes," GU Head Coach Robert Gray said. "We reduced our big numbers but still still need to improve in that area. We also need to convert more putts, which was a area where we also struggled this week. Tyler posted posted another good round, continuing his solid play. Chris also played well today, getting it to 4 under at one point. He hit the ball really well and just had a few missed putts to get back to even par.
"We can be much more competitive with this group of men and it's always good to move up the leaderboard. We're definitely heading in the right direction but we need to get our 3rd & 4th scores lower along with consistency throughout the lineup before the WCC Championship."
UCLA's Cole Madey won the individual title in a playoff. He and Wyoming's John Murdock were both 13-under (203), prior to the playoff.
The Bruins won the team title at 23-under (841). UCLA was five-under (283) as a team in the final round. Cal State Fullerton placed second at 16-under (848).
Gonzaga is at the West Coast Conference Championships from April 25-27. The championships will be played the Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton, Calif. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com.
