
Cross Country Makes Short Trek to Colfax Friday

Zag men ranked seventh in West Region currently
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga women's and men's cross country programs head to the Cougar Classic Friday in Colfax, Wash. The Zags will get an early look at the same course that will host the NCAA West Regionals Nov. 15.
The course was the host of the 2015 Pac-12 Cross Country Championships. The runners will circle a 2,000-meter loop four times on the men's side, and three times in the women's race.
Last season at the Cougar Classic, Gonzaga's James Mwaura coasted to a first-place finish. His 23:55 finish over the 8,000-meter course was the fourth-fastest in program history. The Bulldog men dominated the field placing their top six runners in the Top 10, with the seventh finishing 12th. Lauren Haas paced the Gonzaga women to a fourth-place team finish. She placed 16th at 22:11.
Gonzaga once again opened its season at the Clash of the Inland Northwest. The annual meet was held at Eastern Washington University. The Zag women and men swept the team titles at the meet. The Zag women placed three runners inside the Top-10, while the GU men swept the top three spots and had six Top-10 finishers.
The Bulldogs' Cullen McEachern won the men's race, finishing the 6,000-meter course at 18:00.5. Gonzaga's Phillip Fishburn was second at 18:00.8, while Luke Mason was third (18:01.2). Emily Phelps led the Zag women with fifth place at 14:31.4, the ninth-fastest 4K time in program history.
Both of the Zag women and men will take 21 runners to Colfax. The women's 6K race begins at 5:15 p.m., followed by the men's 8K race at 5:45 p.m. Results will be available on GoZags.com after the event.
Besides host Washington State, Gonzaga will compete against Portland State, Seattle University, Loyola Marymount, Walla Walla University, Whitworth, and the Community Colleges of Spokane.
