Men’s golf heads to California for second event of the season
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's golf team continues their fall schedule at the Nick Watney Invitational hosted by Fresno State Monday and Tuesday at the Fort Washington Country Club.
The tournament will be held for the 56th time this season after the inaugural Fresno State Classic was held in 1964 and the event was renamed the Nick Watney Invitational in the fall of 2014. The two-day affair returns to Fort Washington in northeast Fresno for the first time since 2015. Watney turned pro in 2003 following a career at Fresno State from 2000-03. He has since earned 49 career Top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour.
Some of the past competitors in the Nick Watney Invitational (called the Fresno State Classic and Fresno State Lexus Classic in years past) that went on to compete on the PGA Tour include Tom Watson, Craig Stadler, Mike Watney, Johnny Miller, Ray Leach, Bobby Clampett, Scott Simpson, Willie Wood, Billy Andred, Arron Oberholser, Mike Springer, Phil Mickelson, Tim Norris and Nick Watney to name a few.
This year's field includes BYU, Cal Poly, CBU, CSUN, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Long Beach State, Pacific, Sacramento State, San Diego, San Jose State, Seattle U, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara. Individuals from Pepperdine and Saint Mary's will also compete.
Nevada held off a BYU rally for the 2018 team title. The Wolf Pack had an 11-stroke lead entering the final round, but after a 16-under (272) Round 3 finish by BYU, Nevada won by only one stroke. The Wolf Pack were 30-under (834) in the tournament. Joey Vrzich of Nevada took medalist honors at 14-under (202). He was two-under (70) in the final round. BYU's Carson Lundell was second at 12-under (204).
Last year at the event, Gonzaga was 20-over (884) and placed 10th. The Zags' Chris Mogg made 15 pars in his final round at the Nick Watney Invitational and finished tied for 25th.
The Zags opened their schedule at the weather-shortened Husky Classic Sept. 16-17. The Bulldogs tied for 11th as a team with San Diego at 16-over (592).
Monday's first and second rounds will be shotgun starts, beginning with Round 1 at 8:45 a.m. The third and final round begins Tuesday morning. Live scoring via Golf Stat will be available on GoZags.com.
