Campbell had 13 points, Loera 11 points and five assists
SAN FRANCISCO – No. 16/13 Gonzaga women's basketball opened up a big lead in the second half and never looked back in a 69-46 win at San Francisco on Saturday evening.
Gonzaga (18-1, 7-0) put together a strong performance from start to finish at USF (7-12, 0-7) to stay undefeated in West Coast Conference play and complete the weekend road sweep.
"When we settled in offensively, we were working for team shots and we made a really high percentage" head coach Lisa Fortier said. "It was a grind around the basket, USF was very physical, but once we got those threes it really started to open things up for us. We are really happy with the wins, but I'm really happy with the way our team came down here and competed. We have struggled from time-to-time in this series, and I thought that in both games we came out and were mentally tough. We knew what to expect and we were determined to stay accountable and take care of what we can control."
Katie Campbell led the way with 13 points, among four Zags in doubles figures. Jessie Loera provided a spark with 11 points and five assists, while Jenn and LeeAnne Wirth each had 10 points.
Gonzaga used strong defense and the three-pointer to build an early lead in the first quarter. Louise Forsyth hit a three to make it 10-6, and then GU forced a turnover that led to a pair of Campbell free throws for a 14-6 lead.
After USF closed the GU lead down to two by the end of the quarter, the Zags came out of the break with a 12-2 run to begin the second and never looked back. KayLynne Truong and Loera each hit threes in the final two minutes of the half to push the lead to 36-24 at halftime.
GU held its 12-point lead through the third quarter, and then early in the fourth Campbell got hot and the Zags pulled away with an 18-5 run to build a 25-point lead. Campbell had a pair of threes, and Jenn Wirth scored eight points during a quarter in which GU held USF to just eight points.
Gonzaga heads back home for its next four games, starting with Pepperdine on Thursday at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast online on the WCC Network.
