In the first tournament of the spring season, Ruel opened the event with a 74 (+4) in Round 1, before carding a 67 (-3) in the second round. He made nine birdies on the first day, which was the third-most in the 85-golfer field. The redshirt junior made six birdies and nine pars in Round 2. He is one-over (141) entering the final round.
The Zags are in seventh as a team at 23-over (583). GU rose from 10th to seventh after the first round. The Bulldogs had a 298 (+18) team total in Round 1, and a 285 (+5) in the second round.

He was three-over (73). Salas was one of 10 golfers that made an eagle on Day 1. After a 78 (+8) in the first round, he was one-under (69) in Round 2. His second round featured 12 pars, two birdies and the eagle on the Par-5 seventh hole.
Playing as an individual, Holden Backes is tied for 38th at eight-over (148). He was five-over (75) in the first round and three-over (73) in Round 2. He made three birdies and 10 pars in the second round. Grant Johnson (151, +11) and Chris Mogg (160, +20) are tied for 53rd and 81st.
"Definitely some first tourney jitters in the first round," GU Head Coach Robert Gray said. "The greens complexes are very difficult and if you miss the green in the wrong spot you're chance of getting up and down are pretty low. Unfortunately, we found a fair amount of those spots the first round but definitely improved the second round. Great scores from Matt and Brentt in the second round. Zach played pretty well through both rounds. Another day to get four good scores tomorrow. Guys fought hard today and never showed signs of not being mentally competitive."
Idaho's Joseph Glenn and Witchayapat Sinsrang of Omaha are tied for first at four-under (136). Omaha tops the team leaderboard at four-over (564). Seattle and Cal Poly are tied for second at 11-over (571).
The third and final round of The Joust begins at 8 a.m. Tuesday. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com.
