Mwaura runs fastest 10K in program history
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Gonzaga men's cross country finished a program-best fifth overall in a loaded NCAA West Regional Championship race Friday morning, led by a fifth-place individual finish from James Mwaura that topped his own previous best for the fastest 10K time in program history.
Mwaura's 29:35.2 time anchored a 107-point outing for the Zags, which also got the fourth- and sixth-fastest 10K times in program history from Wil Smith (14th, 30:04.5) and Cullen McEachern (17th, 30:10.6) to make it three runners in the top 20 — all earning All-West Region honors. 107 points is GU's lowest-ever team score at a Regional Championship. Behind the Zags' top three was Kyle Radosevich (29th, 30:23.3), Evan Bates (42nd, 30:41.1), Riley Moore (47th, 30:49.1) and Dominic Arce (74th, 31:21.7).
"So proud of this team," said GU Head Coach Pat Tyson. "They battled hard against big time ranked programs and they endured! Our next goal: Qualify!"
The Zags will learn whether they will qualify for the NCAA National Championships for the second consecutive year with Saturday's NCAA Selection Show, set for 2 p.m. GU made it as a team for the first time last season, and is currently ranked No. 15 in the USTFCCCA Coaches' Poll.
