Zags scheduled for six tournaments in the spring
SPOKANE, Wash. -- Gonzaga women's golf is starting off this spring the same as last: with a trip to Vegas and a tournament featuring opponents from all over the country.
The three-round Rebel Beach Invitational, hosted by UNLV, kicks off on Monday morning on the same course that the Zags opened their spring on in 2020 — the par-72 Spanish Trail Country Club. This year's 13-team field includes BYU, Colorado State, Iowa, Fresno State, SMU and more.
In last year's tourney, GU finished seventh as a team with three players in the top 30, all returners in Federica Torre (11th), Quynn Duong (14th) and Cassie Kim (28th).
The southwest will be a frequent destination for GU in the spring; Rebel Beach is one of six non-conference events the Zags will compete in this spring, all in either Arizona or Nevada. They include the Jackrabbit Invitational in Boulder City, NV, the Red Rocks Invitational in Sedona, AZ, the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic in Maricopa, AZ, and the Bobcat Desert Classic in Goodyear, AZ, leading up to the WCC Championship in Vegas on April 22.
Picked fourth in the WCC all-preseason poll, the Zags also boast two all-conference selections in Duong and fifth year senior Jessica Mangrobang, two of the team's six returners from last spring.
Mangrobang had two top-five finishes in 2019-20, tying for third at the Coeur d'Alene Collegiate and fifth at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational. She had four rounds at par or lower, with a 74.78 season average.
Duong, a junior, finished 2019 as WCC Freshman of the year and first team all-conference selection, and went on to lead the team with a 72.87 stroke average in 2020, 10 rounds of par or better and five finishes in the top 20.
The Rebel Beach classic begins at 8:30 a.m. on Monday. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com.
