Bulldogs honor seniors Hunter Egger & Matthew Perkins
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's tennis team fell 4-1 to visiting #31 Pepperdine Sunday afternoon inside the Stevens Center.
The Waves took an early lead winning two of the three courts in doubles play. Court 2 was first to finish with Corrado Summaria and Tim Zeitvogel defeating Matthew Perkins and Matthew Hollingworth 6-3. Shortly after, Theo McDonald and Oliver Andersson fell 6-2 on court 1. Sasha Trkulja and Leon Roider were leading 5-3 on court 3 but went unfinished.
Pablo Gomez Galvan was first to finish in singles, falling 6-1, 6-4 on court 5 against Pepperdine's Zeitvogel. On court 2, Sasha Trkulja fell 6-4, 6-4 to Guy De Ouden. Matthew Hollingworth secured a win on court 1, defeating Adrian Oetzbach 7-6 (9-7), 6-3 to give the Bulldogs their only point of the match. On court 3, Andersson came back from a 6-3 first-set loss to win 6-4 in the second. He fell 6-2 in the third set to give the Waves their fourth and final point of the match.
"It was not the result we were hoping for, but the guys were fighting really hard," said Head Coach Jonas Piibor. "We want to acknowledge our seniors Hunter Egger and Matt Perkins for what they have done for this program."
Between doubles and singles play, the program honored its two seniors, Hunter Egger and Matthew Perkins. Egger has played in over 50 singles and 60 doubles matches over the course of his career. He carries an even 26-26 overall record in singles play and a 26-24 record in doubles, and he is a two-time WCC All-Academic Honorable Mention. Perkins played in over 45 singles and 50 doubles matches in his four years as a Zag. He has a 21-21 singles record and 22-26 record in doubles, and he was named an ITA Scholar-Athlete in 2020.
