Bulldogs chasing sixth-straight title

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga women's rowing team is in Vancouver, Wash., ahead of the West Coast Conference Championships Saturday, May 15 on Vancouver Lake. The Zags are chasing their sixth-straight WCC title—19th overall—and their seventh NCAA Championships berth.

"I am really excited to have gotten to this point to be competing for a conference championship when that was anything but guaranteed just months ago," Head Coach Andrew Derrick said. "I am incredibly proud of the job the team has done of weathering this very tumultuous year, and they continue to improve and train hard."

The second varsity four will kick off the racing at 8:40 a.m. on Saturday, followed by the varsity four at 9 a.m., the second varsity eight at 9:20 a.m. and the varsity eight at 9:40 a.m.

"It's going to be some very tough racing this weekend, and while we truly hope it goes our way, if it does not it won't be from lack of effort," Derrick said. "Either way, it will be an exciting watch. Go Zags!"

ABOUT THE WCC CHAMPIONSHIPS
- The Zags have claimed the title each of the last five events; the 2020 WCC Championship was cancelled due to COVID-19.
- Gonzaga won the first nine championships, starting in 1997.
- In the last WCC Championship in 2019, Gonzaga finished with 40 points as the Zags' varsity eight and second varsity eight clinched victories to secure GU's sixth-ever trip to the NCAAs.
- Gonzaga's Lauren English was named the WCC Rower of the Year and All-WCC. Alexa Jadallah took home her third-straight WCC Coxswain of the Year, while then-freshman Grace Cahalane was named the WCC Newcomer of the Year.
- Lindey English, Zoe Calambokidis and Lauren McCallum also earned All-WCC honors.
- Gonzaga, Loyola Marymount and San Diego are the only three schools to win a WCC title. Gonzaga leads with 18, while San Diego has four and Loyola Marymount has one.

EVENT HISTORY
- The Gonzaga varsity eight has 17 wins at the event, taking runner-up finishes in every other year.
- The second varsity eight has 15 wins, including 11-straight from 2000-2010, and the varsity four has 10, including four in a row from 2005-08. All other finishes are runner-up except for one varsity four performance.
- The seven teams competing include GU, San Diego, LMU, Portland, Saint Mary's, Santa Clara and Creighton, a rowing-only member from Omaha, Neb.

AGAINST WCC PROGRAMS
- GU has faced Portland, San Diego and Loyola Marymount so far this season.
- The Zags swept Portland in all four races on April 11 in the lone regatta of the season at the Johnson Family Boathouse on Silver Lake.
- In the season-opening regatta at the CVEATC Invitational in Chula Vista, Calif., San Diego swept both Gonzaga and LMU in each race, while the Zags topped the Lions in each race, finishing second.
