Lisa Fortier Named WCC Coach of the Year, Kaylynne Truong WCC Player of the Year

Yvonne Ejim, Brynna Maxwell and Truong also tabbed First All-WCC honors

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Gonzaga's Kaylynne Truong was named the 2023 West Coast Conference Player of the Year and head coach Lisa Fortier was named the WCC Coach of the Year the league announced Wednesday.

Truong, Yvonne Ejim and Brynna Maxwell were selected First Team All-WCC. McKayla Williams was tabbed honorable mention and Calli Stokes earned All-Freshman Team honors.

Truong is Gonzaga's 11th Player of the Year and the first since 2021. This is the fifth time that Fortier has been named Coach of the Year as the last time she earned the honor was in 2019.

All individual awards – along with the All-West Coast Conference Teams and the All-Freshman Team – were voted on by the league's 10 head coaches.

Fortier has taken Gonzaga to new heights this year as the Zags have multiple top-25 wins and currently sit at 27-3 overall and 14-1 in the WCC. In Battle 4 Atlantis, Gonzaga defeated then-ranked No. 6 Louisville in overtime, marking the highest ranked win in GU women's basketball history. Two days later, the Zags defeated then-ranked No. 23 Tennessee to take third place in the tournament. Despite the injuries that plagued GU this season, Fortier led the team to a 14-game winning streak and a perfect 15-0 at home this year. The Bulldogs won the Regular Season WCC Title for the 18th time this season, which is Fortier's seventh in just nine years at the helm. The Zags have also appeared in the AP Top 25 poll since Nov. 28 as Fortier was recently named a Naismith Coach of the Year candidate.

This marks Truong's first all-conference honors. The Houston, Texas, native has stepped up in a big role this year as Gonzaga's starting point guard. She averaged 17.4 points a game during conference play and 16.4 points overall this season. She currently ranks 16th in the country in three-point percentage with 42.3 percent. She has dished out 148 assists so far this season to rank first in the conference and 25th in the nation. She averages 4.9 assists per game to also lead the WCC. She has scored in double figures 26 times this season, including a career high of 26 at Pepperdine.

Ejim has been a force on the court and currently leads the Zags in scoring with 16.4 points a game and has recorded six double doubles already this year. She has scored at least 20 points in nine games this season, including a career-high 32-point performance against Queens on Dec. 6. With her efforts so far this year, she has been named WCC Player of the Week three times, while she averages 27.8 minutes a game. She has also scored in double figures 26 times this season.

Maxwell, a transfer from Utah, has been a big contributor for the Zags this season. She has led the nation in three-point percentage this season and currently sits at 50 percent from beyond the arc. Maxwell has made a three-pointer in 29 of the 30 games this year and also shoots 94.7 percent from the free throw line. She has appeared in every game for GU and started in 26 to average 13.9 points per game.

Williams has started in every game this season for the Bulldogs to earn her first All-WCC honors. The junior has been a key role for GU's lineup this year and has averaged 30.7 minutes per game. She had a career-high performance at Pacific and scored 19 points for Gonzaga. She averaged 7.8 a game this year and also grabbed 32 steals.

After redshirting last season, Stokes has been a one of the first players off the bench for Gonzaga this year. She earned her first career start back on Dec. 1 at Stephen F. Austin and appeared in 27 games for the Zags. She averaged 19 minutes per contest and had a career-high of 11 points against UC Davis.

With the conclusion of the regular season, WCC teams head to Las Vegas to compete for the 2023 University Credit Union West Coast Conference Basketball Tournament. Action tips off Thursday, March 2, at the Orleans Arena. This year is the 14th WCC Tournament in Las Vegas. The Zags will have their first game in the semi-final round on Monday, March 6, at Noon.
