Highlighted by Minni qualifying for US Amateur
SPOKANE, Wash. – Members of the Gonzaga men's golf team are having a busy summer, appearing in tournaments all throughout the west.
Jace Minni claimed a spot in the U.S. Amateur with a third-place finish at a qualifier at the Home Course in DuPont, Wash., on July 6. He became the fourth Zag to advance to the U.S. Amateur Championship since 2013, joining Sean Walsh, James Fahy and Matthew Ruel. Walsh qualified three times.
Minni opened the qualifier with a six-under 66, highlighted by a hole-in-one on the 185-yard sixth and an eagle on the par-5 16th. The senior shot a 2-under 70 in the second round with three birdies and his lone bogey over 36 holes. He finished at 8-under 136, two strokes behind the co-medalists.
The 123rd U.S. Amateur will be held Aug. 14-20 at Cherry Hills Country Club near Denver, Colo. Approximately 8,000 players attempted to qualify.
At the British Columbia Amateur at the Morningstar Golf Club, Minni placed second finishing the 72-hole tournament at eight-under (280). He climbed seven spots on the leaderboard with a final round six-under 66.
Minni and Guillermo Polo Bodart advanced to match play at PNGA Men's Amateur. At Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash., Bodart lost in the round of 64 and Minni fell in the round of 16.
Minni tied for 27th at the Washington State Men's Amateur Championships, while former Bulldog Zach Stocker tied for 10th. The tournament at Wine Valley Golf Club in Walla Walla from June 27-29, was a 54-hole event. Stocker was two-under (214), carding a 71 in the first and final rounds. Minni was three-over (219).
Stocker was second at the Rosauers Open Invitational played at Indian Canyon in Spokane. He nearly rallied for medalist honors finishing at 17-under (196), two strokes behind the winner. Stocker opened the event with a 66, before carding back-to-back rounds of 65.
