Bulldogs finish Idaho State Tournament 1-1
POCATELLO, Idaho – The Gonzaga volleyball team bounced back from a 3-1 loss on Friday to sweep Idaho State 25-22, 25-21, 25-22 in the Idaho State Invitational finale on Saturday. The Zags will leave Pocatello after a 1-1 weekend before traveling to Cheney on Thursday to take on Eastern Washington.
THE ACTION
First Set – Gonzaga, 25-22
- Continuing her hometown dominance for Gonzaga (3-5) this weekend, Zoe Thiros picked up a pair of kills right away in the first set to give the Zags a quick 2-0 lead over Idaho State (1-7). She would pick up two more as GU expanded their lead, now up 12-6.
- Sophomore Tyra Schaub followed Thiros' lead, picking up four kills of her own as Gonzaga held an 18-13 lead over the Bengals.
- ISU promptly responded, shrinking the GU lead to just one (22-21) until Thiros' seventh kill of the set shut down the rally. Gonzaga never trailed in Set One as Juliette Russell slammed the door to give the Zags a 1-0 lead (25-22).
- Thiros finished the first set with seven kills on nine attempts, good for a .778 attack percentage.
- Picking up immediately where she left off, Thiros opened the second set with three more kills to bring her match total to ten as Gonzaga led 4-2 early. Idaho State would battle back to take their first lead of the match at 5-4 in Set Two, but a 5-0 response from GU put them back in front.
- The Bulldogs and Bengals traded points through the midway point of the second as the set was knotted at 18. Alisa Kim's second ace of the set sparked a 4-0 run that gave Gonzaga a 22-18 lead, before eventually taking the set 25-21 and 2-0 match lead.
- The Zags picked up 14 kills in Set Two, with Schaub, Thiros, Fallon Thompson, and Jody Smith each picking up multiple kills.
- Idaho State was first to score in Set Three, with Sadie Bluth and Jadyn Watts combining for four early kills and a 4-1 Bengal lead.
- Gonzaga scratched away at the ISU lead, eventually closing the gap to just one, trailing 10-9. It wouldn't be until another Kim service ace that GU would tie things up at 17-17. Taking an 18-17 lead, GU would not trail again as Thiros' 17th and 18th kills looked to secure the sweep.
- Idaho State pushed to extend the match to a fourth set, but just as she did in the first, Russell slammed the door to give Gonzaga the 25-22 set win and 3-0 sweep.
QUICK STATS
- Thiros' 18 kills mark a new season-high just one day after setting the mark at 17. She combined for 35 kills and 20 digs, hitting at a .325 clip over her the two matches in her return to Pocatello and adding three aces and blocks.
- Tyra Schaub picked up double-digit kills for the second time this season, picking up four kills in the first and three in the second and third sets.
