SPOKANE, Wash. – Yvonne Ejim posted a double double with 13 points and 11 rebounds to help propel the Gonzaga Bulldogs to a 62-51 win over Wyoming.
Ines Bettencourt led the Zags with 17 points, a career-high for the junior.
Allie Turner nearly scored double digits in her second career start at GU with nine.
Gonzaga (2-2) outscored Wyoming (1-3) in the first quarter, 20-11. Bettencourt led the team with nine points. Gonzaga shot at 75% and went 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. GU finished the quarter by starting a 14-0 run that went into the second quarter.
The Zags had the 31-28 lead at the half as Wyoming outscored them by a slim 13-11 margin in the second quarter. Emily Mellema led the Cowgirls with seven points in the frame.
In the third quarter, Gonzaga held Wyoming to nine points and scored 13 as a team. GU went 6-for-10 from the floor and held Wyoming to a 28.6% shooting performance in the third.
The Bulldogs closed out the game by outscoring the Cowgirls, 18-14, as Ejim and Bettencourt both scored six points. Defensively, GU held Wyoming to 30.8% overall in the final minutes to seal the double-digit win.
Overall, Gonzaga shot at 46.9% from the floor and 42.9% from the three-point line. Defensively, Gonzaga held Wyoming's leading scorer, Allyson Fertig to only six points, when she came into the game averaging over 20 points.
The Bulldogs also outrebounded the Cowgirls, 39-28, and forced 12 turnovers. GU scored an impressive 30 points from inside the paint and only allowed 18 from Wyoming.
Records: Yvonne Ejim has now scored double digits in 46-straight games as she recorded 13 points. She also recorded her 27th – and second of the season – double double with 11 rebounds.
Ejim currently has 1,728 career points and is 438 points away from breaking the all-time scoring record. She now sits at fourth of all-time at Gonzaga in scoring.
