SPOKANE, Wash. – Braeden Smith, a transfer from Colgate, signed a financial aid agreement to attend Gonzaga University and will join the men's basketball team for the 2024-25 season.
Smith, a Seattle native, joins the Zags after being named the Patriot League Player of the Year and leading Colgate to the conference title last season. The 6-0, 180-pound guard averaged 12.5 points, 5.6 assists, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.9 steals per game in 2023-24. He started all 70 of Colgate's games in his two seasons at Colgate and helped guide the Raiders to the NCAA Tournament the past two years.
Colgate was 51-19 during Smith's freshman and sophomore seasons, including 33-3 in Patriot League play. During his two seasons with the Raiders, he scored 842 points (12 ppg), dished out 351 assists (5 apg), grabbed 327 rebounds (4.7 rpg), and made 111 steals (1.6 spg). Smith also made 87 three-pointers, with 52 coming last season.
During his freshman season, Smith was named to the Patriot League All-Rookie Team after being named the league's Rookie of the Week four times. He averaged 11.6 points and 4.4 assists in his first collegiate season.
At Seattle Prep, Smith was a two-time Metro League Athlete of the Year (2021, 2022) as a four-year starter. He scored 1,403 points during his high school career and set the school record for career assists (502) and steals (210). He garnered First Team All-State and First Team All-Metro honors, averaging 18.5 points, seven assists and 2.5 steals during senior campaign on his way to Metro League Athlete of the Year. In football, Smith was also a First Team All-League quarterback in 2022 and All-League wide receiver in 2021.
