SANTA CLARA, Calif.- Gonzaga Volleyball lost to Santa Clara in five sets for the second time this season, dropping the rematch on Thursday night.
The Zags opened the game by capturing the first set with an impressive score of 25-11, before dropping each of the next two sets with scores of 25-22. Gonzaga opened the first set assertively with a huge 13-5 run to open the match that established a set victory right off the bat for the Zags. GU hit a huge .435% in the first frame while holding Santa Clara to -.1% hitting thanks to a stifling defense. The Zags were not able to maintain this momentum in the second set, where Santa Clara surged back to win the set despite the Zags still hitting a solid .276% in the second.
After a lengthy review to decide the set point in favor of Santa Clara to close the third set, the Zags rallied in the fourth with three of the final five points of the set coming from kills from Kelly McAuley to force the fifth. A run of six unanswered points from Santa Clara allowed the match to slip away from the Zags in the extra set, as an unfortunate script repeated: the Zags have lost both matches against the Broncos this season as a result of 15-11 scores in the fifth set.
The Zags will look to repeat a victory over San Francisco on Saturday as they continue their WCC bay area road trip, taking on the Dons at noon.
