
Volleyball loses to Pepperdine 3-0

MALIBU, Calif- Gonzaga Volleyball (14-14, 7-10) was swept in straight sets by Pepperdine (20-8, 14-4) on Wednesday afternoon. Pepperdine took the sets 25-23, 25-17 and 25-21.
Despite pushing back to attempt to capture the first set, the Zags came up short even though they held the Waves to only a .132 hitting percentage in the first frame. This was the lowest margin that Pepperdine hit all match. The second set got away from GU as well after Pepperdine was able to establish a strong block and hold the Zags to only 10 kills in the second set. Pepperdine was credited with an impressive 12 blocks in the match, triple that of the GU defense.
Pepperdine closed out the third thanks to their strong service game, as the waves ended the match with 10 aces. Despite holding the Waves to only .269 hitting the Zags were swept, largely a result of the Waves holding GU to only a .104 hitting percentage as well. Pepperdine currently sits second in the WCC and was recently named to the AVCA top 50 teams in the country, indicating that this sweep was not a poor performance but was instead the result of running into one of the best teams in the region.
The difficult end of the schedule will continue as Gonzaga plays their final match of the season at San Diego on Saturday at noon. San Diego currently is undefeated in WCC play and has already secured the conference championship.
