FORT MYERS, Fla. — Gonzaga (3-4) fell to Indiana (7-0), 76-72, in a tightly contested neutral-site matchup.
The first quarter commenced with Indiana's Shay Ciezki scoring an early jumper, setting the tone for a tightly contested quarter.
Lauren Whittaker responded for GU with a layup, assisted by
Allie Turner, to keep the game tied at 2-2. The teams exchanged leads multiple times, with key plays including a fastbreak three-pointer by Turner at 7:31 and a three-pointer by Whittaker at 0:46 to tie the game at 18-18. However, Indiana edged ahead just before the buzzer when Phoenix Stotijn hit a free throw with one second remaining, giving them a narrow 19-18 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Zags gained a slight edge over Indiana in the second quarter, outscoring them 18-16. Turner opened the scoring for the Bulldogs with a jumper, while
Jaiden Haile contributed crucial points, including a layup at 7:04 and an assist to Whittaker for a layup at 3:03. Indiana kept the game tight with a three-pointer from Ciezki at 2:49 and a drive by Nevaeh Caffey, who added a layup and a free throw in the final minute. Despite Indiana's efforts, GU maintained a narrow lead heading into the second half.
Indiana widened their lead in the third quarter, starting with a layup and free throw by Lenée Beaumont at 9:18, bringing the score to 38-36. Ciezki extended the advantage with a layup at 8:41. Turner responded for the Zags with a jumper and a three-pointer, narrowing the gap to 53-48 at 2:18. Zania Socka-Nguemen sealed the quarter for Indiana, hitting two free throws with 10 seconds on the clock, ending the quarter at 57-51.
Gonzaga and Indiana concluded a tense final quarter with Indiana holding on to secure a 76-72 victory.
Taylor Smith initiated GU's efforts with an early layup at 9:07, narrowing the gap to 57-53. Turner's two crucial three-pointers, one at 4:15 and another at 2:46, brought the score to 66-65. Despite a late layup and free throw by Haile at 0:20, Indiana maintained their lead.
Looking ahead, the Bulldogs will face Marquette on Sunday, Nov. 30, at 8 a.m. PT.
