COTO DE CAZA, Calif. – Gonzaga men's golf started its spring schedule with a fourth-place finish at the Van Harte Orange County Collegiate Classic hosted by UC-Irvine at the Coto de Caza Golf Club.
The Bulldogs were 21-over (885), after opening the 54-hole event with a 287 (-1) in Round 1. The one-under first round total matched the lowest round by any team in the tournament. GU was second in the 10-team field on the course's Par-3 holes at 13-over (3.22), and second on the Par-4 holes at 19-over (4.13). The Zags' three eagles were the second-most, and the 50 birdies were third.
Guillermo Polo Bodart led Gonzaga with a 14
th-place finish at four-over (220). He opened the tournament carding a 70 (-2) in the first round. The junior's first round featured 12 pars and four birdies.
Charlie Olson placed 19
th at six-over (222). He had back-to-back rounds of 73 (+1) Monday. The freshman eagled the Par-5 12
th hole in Round 1.
Ethan Flynn was seven-over (223) in a tie for 20
th. The Truckee, Calif., native, carded a 70 (-2) in a first round that featured 13 pars, two birdies, and an eagle on Hole 18.
Daniel Nunez placed 24
th at eight-over (224). He eagled the Par-4 17
th hole in Round 1, and was two-under (70) in the final round with five birdies.
Bruce Chang and
Daniel Kim were 44
th and 45
th. Chang had an even-par (72) final round and finished 18-over (234). Kim, playing as an individual, was 19-over (235).
Peicheng Chen of St. John's took medalist honors at six-under (210). UC Santa Barbara's Ryan Gay was second at four-under (212).
Cal State Fullerton held off UC Riverside for the team title. Fullerton was six-over (870) as a team, while UCR was eight-over (872).
