LA JOLLA, Calif. – Gonzaga men's golf tied for 12
th at the fifth annual UC San Diego Invitational. For the first time the three-day 54-hole event was contested on the renowned South Course at Torrey Pines.
The Bulldogs were 52-over (916) in the 20-team tournament. GU improved its team total score each round, with its lowest round of 300 (+12) on the final day.
Bruce Chang led the Zags tying for 28
th at 11-over (227). He carded a 72 (E) in the final round, making four birdies and 10 pars.
Ethan Flynn and
Charlie Olson tied for 60
th (15-over, 231). Flynn made three birdies on the final day in his lowest round of 73 (+1), while Olson's second round of 74 (+2) was his lowest round.
Guillermo Polo Bodart was right behind at 16-over (232) in 65
th place.
Daniel Kim was 27-over (243) in the event.
Daniel Nunez, playing as an individual, was 17-over (233) in 69
th place. Nunez was also even-par (72) in the final round with four birdies and 10 pars.
New Mexico State, ranked 64th nationally, shot five-under Tuesday and finished at +21 to top the field. Arkansas State (+23), also ranked among the nation's top 100 at 88, finished second and UC Irvine (+27) was third.
The individual medal winner was Thomas Schmidt from Arkansas State. The lone player in the field to finish below par, he fired rounds of 71, 68, and 72 to go five-under.
Gonzaga returns to the Wyoming Cowboy Classic at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Course in Maricopa, Ariz., March 31 and April 1. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com.
