PULLMAN, Wash. – Gonzaga women's tennis closed out the final day of the Washington State Cougar Classic today with several hard-fought battles and a strong finish in doubles play.
In singles action,
Rose Hayes bounced back after dropping the opening set to earn a gritty three-set win over Montana's Kelsey Phillips, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3. Hayes' resilience stood out in a weekend where she showed grit and determination.
Teammates
Ella Nielsen and Madeline MacNeille both came up short against tough Portland opponents. Nielsen fell to Alaia Rubio, 6-2, 6-2, while MacNeille battled in a competitive second set before dropping a 6-2, 7-5 match to Maria Galatescu.
Brooke Bittner battled but came up short against Montana's Meghan Anand, 6-3, 6-0.
The Bulldogs ended the day on a high note in doubles. The pairing of Hayes and Bittner edged out Montana's Phillips and Anand in a nail-biting tiebreaker, 8-7 (6). The victory gave Gonzaga a strong closing highlight to the weekend. Meanwhile, Nielsen and MacNeille came up short in their match, falling 8-4 to Portland's Rubio and Galatescu.
The Zags built great momentum in Pullman and are excited to keep it going through the fall season.
