SPOKANE, Wash- Gonzaga Volleyball (5-10, 0-3 Pac-12) came three points short of a victory against Colorado State (10-3, 3-0 Pac-12) on Thursday night. GU won the first set 25-23 before dropping the second set in an identical score. CSU then won the third 25-12 before GU tied the match with a 26-24 win in the fourth. The Rams then won the match with a final 15-12 set victory.
Maggie Rickert recorded 36 digs in the match, the second highest total by a Zag in a single match in program history. The Zags had 83 digs and 14 blocks today while putting forth a strong defensive effort.
For the fourth time this year the Zags came within three points of a win in extra sets, nearly handing Colorado State their first loss from a non-ranked team. The Zags held Colorado State to just a .185 hitting percentage across the 2 hour and 37 minute match. This was the third lowest hitting percentage in a match this season for a Rams this season that has faced a ranked team four times this season.
The first set was tied at 14 different points and had six separate lead changes. The Zags won the hugely competitive set by holding the Rams to just .054 hitting in the first set thanks to 5 Zag. Colorado State took the second set to even the match despite six different Zags scoring a kill in the set.
Gonzaga was held to just eight kills in the third set to give the Rams a temporary lead. The Zags then evened the game behind a standout fourth set from Veronia Sorensen, who had 6 kills in the set to lead the GU offense to equalize. Sorensen ended the match with a team high 16 kills. Gonzaga fought off two match points while on a 4-0 run to take the set and force an extra frame.
Colorado had their most efficient hitting set in the fifth when they had 12 kills to win the match. Twelve different Zags appeared in the match as part of an effort that pushed Colorado State to the very end of the game, led in part by the tremendous libero play from Rickert.
Gonzaga will return to the court next Thursday when they travel to Texas State in another Pac-12 matchup.
