
Women's Tennis Takes Down the Nation's No. 5 Doubles Pairing

The Zags Picked Up Major Wins at the ITA Regionals Saturday
PALO ALTO, Calif. – The Gonzaga women's tennis team finished the third day of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships Saturday evening, earning two doubles victories in the Round of 16, including an impressive victory against a ranked opponent.Â
Beginning the day with Round of 16 doubles play, Emily Robertson and Ella Nielsen upset Washington's Alexia Jacobs and Anna-Marie Weissheim, 8-7(1). Jacobs and Weissheim are ranked No. 5 in the NCAA preseason doubles rankings. Following that impressive win, Angelina Hug and Sia Cariov picked up another upset win, this time against Naomi Xu and Nika Hurkacz (Cal), with a strong 8-3 final score.
With their Round of 16 victories, both Gonzaga pairings advanced to the quarterfinals. Robertson and Nielsen played Saint Mary's Priya Nelson and Stella Remander. The Gaels ultimately won the match, 8-5, and will move forward to the doubles semifinal. In a similar fate, Hug and Cariov played their quarterfinals match against Nela Jandova/Marina Markina (UW), and fell, 8-6. Both Gonzaga teams were eliminated from the main doubles draw following their quarterfinal losses.
In consolation doubles, Kelsey Phillips and Aisulu Zholbolat won their match against UC Davis with a commanding 6-2 score. Fresno State's Milena Maiorova and Anna Noguero Asensio battled against the Zags' Madeleine MacNeille and Sveva Zerpelloni and ultimately claimed the victory, 6-4.Â
After her impressive victory against Stanford's No. 19 Monika Ekstrand on Friday, Angelina Hug played her Round of 32 match against Sofia Daryaie (SMC). Daryaie ended up taking the win, 6-4, 7-6(1), knocking out the final Gonzaga player from the main singles draw.Â
In consolation singles, Aisulu Zholbolat and Sveva Zerpelloni won their matches against Sac State and Pacific, respectively, after both opponents withdrew due to injury. Continuing on the win streak, Kelsey Phillips beat Santa Clara's Juliette Krumholz, 3-6, 6-1, [10-8], after a close match tiebreak. Madeleine MacNeille claimed victory over her Sacramento State opponent, 6-7(3), 6-3, [10-8]. The lone consolation singles loss of the day came in Saturday's final match between Sia Cariov and Nel Van Hout. Van Hout took the win, 7-6(5), 3-6, [10-7].
Competition continues through Oct. 11 at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships, hosted by Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif. This is one of 13 regional competitions ITA will hold around the U.S. during October, with singles finalists and doubles champions from each region qualifying for the fall NCAA Singles Championship and NCAA Doubles Championship.
