The Bulldogs Will Finish This Weekend's Play Tomorrow
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's tennis team finished the second day of the Pac-12 Fall Championship and the Duck Invite (taking place in Eugene, Oregon) today, collecting wins in both singles and doubles play.
In the Pac-12 Fall Championship, only one doubles match was played by Gonzaga. Jay Fairclough and Nicholas Reeves began their semifinal match against Boise State with a dominant 6-0 first set before falling in the second, 4-6. The duo rallied to take the match in a neck-and-neck match tiebreak, [11-9]. Fairclough and Reeves will play in the championship doubles final tomorrow against San Diego State.
For the Duck Invite, the Bulldogs participated in two doubles matches. Diego Herrera and Tristan Hernandez were defeated in their match against Portland State's Vitomir Petcov and Luca Prino, 4-6. In a similar outcome, Michael Mitchell and Noah Pawirodirjo fell against Portland's Tom Garcia and Elijah Noel, 3-6.
In singles matches, the Bulldogs picked up one win in the match between Hernandez and Shun Wakino (PSU). Hernandez crushed the first set, 6-1, was narrowly defeated in the second in a tiebreak, 6-7(5), and dominated to finish with the win in the third set, 6-2. Mitchell and Herrera both went to three sets against their Oregon and Portland opponents, respectively. Both players lost their first sets, came back to win the second, and ultimately fell in the third. Pawirodirjo was unable to compete in singles play after withdrawing from the day's competition due to injury.
Competition for both events continues through Sunday. The Pac-12 Fall Championship is hosted at the Bulldogs' home tennis facility, the Stevens Center, in Spokane, Washington. Participating teams include Boise State, Gonzaga, San Diego State, and Utah State. The Duck Invite is hosted by the University of Oregon at the Student Tennis Center.
