Angelina Hug Picked Up a Massive Victory for the Bulldogs
PALO ALTO, Calif. – The Gonzaga women's tennis team continued competition today at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships, earning two doubles victories and recording wins in singles and consolation play.Â
Angelina Hug and Sia Cariov handled Portland, 8-1, then Emily Robertson and Ella Nielsen did the same, beating UC Davis, also 8-1. In a consolation doubles match, Madeleine MacNeille and Sveva Zerpelloni could not prevail, and San Jose took the win, 6-3.
After qualifying for the main singles bracket with victories yesterday, Sveva Zerpelloni dropped in her match against California, Berkeley, on Saturday, 6-4, 6-4.
Emily Robertson, Sia Cariov, and Kelsey Phillips began singles play in the main bracket today. Cariov forced a final set against Portland but fell, 6-4, in the third. Also playing to a third set, Robertson claimed the second in her match against Washington, but her opponent, Alexia Jacobs, claimed the final victory, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
The biggest win of the day for the Bulldogs was Angelina Hug's victory over Stanford's Monika Ekstrand. Ekstrand entered this season ranked No. 19 nationally in the preseason rankings, a notable rise from her No. 83 ranking last year. Hug took advantage of the matchup, defeating Ekstrand 6-4, 6-3 to secure one of Gonzaga's biggest wins of the season to date.
In consolation singles, Ella Nielsen won her match against Washington after her opponent withdrew due to injury. Madeleine MacNeille and Aisulu Zholbolat claimed straight-set victories over Portland State and Fresno State, respectively.
On Saturday, Hug will compete in singles against Saint Mary's Sofia Daryaie, and the duos of Robertson/Nielsen and Hug/Cariov will play in the doubles round of 16.
Competition continues through Oct. 11 at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships, hosted by Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif. This is one of 13 regional competitions ITA will hold around the U.S. during October, with singles finalists and doubles champions from each region qualifying for the fall NCAA Singles Championship and NCAA Doubles Championship.
