GU Volleyball drops five set match to East Texas A&M

San Antonio, Texas- Gonzaga Volleyball (3-6) lost a five set match to East Texas A&M (6-3) on Saturday. GU won the first set 25-19 before dropping the second set 25-13. The Bulldogs won the second set 25-17 before losing the final two sets on scores of 25-13 and 16-14.
The Zags had a comfortable 15-8 lead at the first media timeout, as Claire Wagstaff led al players in the first set with seven points, led by three Aces in the first set alone. The Zags had 14 kills with just 3 errors in the set. Gonzaga won the first set as the result of stellar serves, as the Bulldogs had 7 aces as a team in just the first set.
East Texas A&M responded with four aces of their own to jump out to a quick lead in the second set. The Lions took the set behind that quick early run and only two attacking errors, giving the Bulldogs little to capitalize on.
The Zags had 17 kills in the third set, adding in another two aces while hitting for an incredibly efficient .452 hitting percentage. GU held East Texas A&M to just nine kills in the third set to take the lead.
ETA&M forced an early Gonzaga timeout to open the fourth set after three straight blocks. The Zags had more hitting errors than kills at the fourth set media timeout, giving up points to the Lions to keep the game going. East Texas A&M had another four aces in the set.
Gonzaga took the lead in the fifth for the first time at 11-10, forcing a timeout after a kill and a block in back to back points by Wagstaff. A run of aces by East Texas A&M tied the match at 14 points each, where they then won the match in extra points on a sequence of an attack error and a kill.
Nine different Zags had a kill in today's match, with Wagstaff leading the team with 18 kills and four aces. Both teams had double digit aces in the match, with the Zags having 11 aces to 14 services aces for the Lions. Nia Damuni led the match with 37 assists. Raechelle Dykstra had 27 digs, tying for the most for a Zag in a match since 2023.
Gonzaga returns home to Spokane on Thursday when they open the Zag Volleyball Classic with a match against Seattle at 6 p.m.
