- Bates placed second in the 2018 Division 1 CIF Cross Country State Championships. From there, he qualified with his team, to run at Nike Cross Country Nationals. Bates high school personal bests were 4:18.53 for the Mile, 9:02.03 for the 3200m, 14:21 for the 3-mile, and 15:02 for the 5,000.
