Leanne Stockton returned to her hometown as an assistant athletic trainer at Gonzaga University in the summer of 1999.

A graduate of Spokane's Gonzaga Prep, she graduated from Eastern Washington University in 1987 with a degree in physical education/athletic training. A student trainer during her undergraduate days at EWU, Stockton attended graduate school at the University of Kentucky while working as a graduate assistant athletic trainer. She earned a master's degree in kinesiology from UK.

For eight years she was the head athletic trainer at Kentucky Wesleyan University, overseeing 14 sports from 1990-99.

While at Kentucky, she worked with the women's National Invitation Tournament basketball team. Kentucky Wesleyan's men's basketball team was the runner-up in the 1998 NCAA Division II Championship, then captured the crown in 1999.

Stockton was the head trainer for the Utah Starzz of the WNBA during the league's inception, working for the Starzz from 1997-2001.

She received certification by the National Athletic Trainers' Association and the Washington State Trainers' Association. Stockton is also certified in Adult CPR and Standard First Aid by the American Red Cross.
