Women's Hoops Ends 16-Game Losing Skid

POCATELLO, Idaho - The Gonzaga University women's basketball team (1-1) snapped a 16-game losing streak Saturday by defeating host Idaho State University Bengals 83-68 in the second day of the American Dream Classic.

The Bulldogs ended the Bengals' (1-1) 17-game home winning streak.

Senior guard Bernice Stime led the Bulldogs with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Jessica Malone and Raeanna Jewell contributed 18 points each while Jewell pulled down nine rebounds.

The Bengals and the Bulldogs traded the lead 10 times in the first seven minutes before ISU went on a 13-4 run 12 minutes into the first half.

Malone brought the Bulldogs within one (32-31) with 4:00 to play in the opening half with two consecutive three pointers.

Freshman guard Juliann Laney tied the game 36-36 at 18:30 with a long 3-point bomb, and Jewell gave the Bulldogs a 40-38 halftime lead with a jumper at the buzzer.

The Bulldogs built on their halftime lead to pull ahead by as many as 15 points in the second half. GU shot 54 percent from the field and 88 percent from the free throw line.

Malone was named to the American Dream Classic All-Tournament team amassing 36 points and six rebounds in two games.

The Bulldogs placed second in the tournament behind New Mexico State University (2-0) while Idaho State (1-1) collected third place and the University of Idaho (0-2) finished fourth. Gonzaga lost to NMSU Friday while ISU topped Idaho.

Gonzaga returns to tournament action Tuesday when they face the University of Alaska-Anchorage in the first game of the Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage at 7 p.m. PST.
