Women's Basketball Routs Saint Martin's 79-51

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's basketball team (3-4) routed the Saint Martin's Saints (2-2) 79-51 in a non-conference game Saturday afternoon at the Kennel.
The Saints jumped out to an early lead going on a 13 to 4 point run in the first five minutes, shooting a first-half 46 percent.
Senior guard Bernice Stime evened the score at 22 with a jumper at 8:31.
SMC answered pulling away by as many as five points before Anne Bickelhaupt led GU to another tie with a jumper at 1:42.
Freshman guard Shannon Mathews put away a three-pointer with :36 seconds left to give Gonzaga the 36-34 lead for the first time in the game.
Gonzaga built a 14 point lead in the first five minutes of the second half when they went on a 14 to 3 point run.
The Bulldogs pulled away by as many as 30 points, shooting 54 percent in the second half.
Three Bulldogs chipped in double digit points led by freshman Raeanna Jewell with a game-high 14 points, Jessica Malone tallied 13 while Melanie Tipps recorded 11.
Jewell collected player of the game honors with 14 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists.
Gonzaga shot 47 percent from the field and 57 percent from the line, amassing 15 steals.
The Bulldogs hit the road Tuesday against Eastern Washington University at Cheney, Wash. at 7 p.m.
