No. 14 Santa Clara Holds Off GU Volleyball In Four

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University (2-14, 0-3 WCC) volleyball team put a scare into the 14th-ranked Santa Clara Broncos on Friday night as the Broncos had to hold off a feisty Bulldogs squad in four games. Santa Clara which improved to 14-2, 3-0 in WCC action, won the match 30-21, 30-15, 21-30 and 30-27.
Santa Clara came out firing on all cylinders during the first two games as the Broncos racked up 19 and 18 kills in the first two games. Cindy Hirsch served SCU on an eight point run late in the first game as Santa Clara pulled away from a 20-18 lead. Becky Potter hammered down two of her 17 kills during the crucial game one run.
Game two witnessed more of the same hot hitting Bronco attack as Santa Clara compiled a .429 attack percentage during the 30-15 rout. Megan Johnston served eight straight points to push the Broncos to a 19-10 lead. Potter again had two kills to pace the rally and Alyssa Lantz dropped in two kills.
It was Gonzaga who was able to take advantage of the game breaks in game three, winning the contest 30-21, despite only 10 team kills. Missy Perry had two early service aces which sparked the Bulldogs to a 12-9 lead before Santa Clara rallied to tie the game at 13. Abby Cullen had three kills down the stretch to propel the Zags to the win.
The two squads traded attacks in game four with each team staying within two points of the opponent. The game had 11 ties including five ties after the teams reached a 20-20 deadlock. Kelli Sousa was able to serve the Broncos to the win as Gonzaga committed three late attacking errors. Christina Davis had kept the Bulldogs alive in the match with seven game four kills.
Santa Clara was led by Potter with 17 kills while Cindy Hirsch had a match-high 18 digs. Megan Johnston finished with 13 kills and three service aces. Gonzaga was led by Christina Davis with 17 kills and 15 digs. Natasha Kozen finished with nine blocks for GU and Missy Perry added three service aces. Gonzaga hosts San Francisco in WCC action on Saturday night while Santa Clara will travel to Portland.
