Volleyball loses in four sets to UC San Diego

BERKELEY, Calif.- Gonzaga Volleyball (1-2) lost to UC San Diego (2-1) on Sunday in four sets to close out the opening weekend of the season. UC San Diego won the first set 25-17 before both teams split the next two sets with matching 25-21 scores. The Tritons had another matching 25-17 scoreline in the fourth set to end the game.
The Zags dropped the first set after being held to a .100 hitting percentage. The Tritons had five blocks and another 4 aces in the set to take the early lead despite the teams tying with 11 kills apiece.
The Bulldogs rallied back in the second set, coming back from a brief 19-16 deficit with a huge 9-2 run to take the set win. Megan Deveaux had two of the final kills in the set to even the game, while the run was powered by aces from both Maggie Rickert and Dani Clewis.
GU had another quick 5-0 run in the early part of the third set, forcing a quick timeout from UC San Diego after five straight kills from Veronia Sorensen. The Tritons then responded with an equivalent run of their own to retake the lead and secure the set. UC San Diego secured the fourth and final set with another three aces and thirteen Kills.
Sorensen had an impressive game, scoring 16 kills to lead the match. The Zags had a promising performance from freshman, as Dani Clewis also led the game with 15 digs and 35 assists as a Zag freshman led the game in all three major categories. GU has had a different top scorer in all three matches on the season thus far, with a newcomer leading the team in every game.
