Volleyball Ends Home Season On Down Note

Saint Mary's College (8-17, 5-7 WCC) rallied from a one-game deficit on Saturday night to defeat the host Gonzaga Bulldogs (4-23, 2-11 WCC) during the Bulldogs final home match of the 2002 season. Saint Mary's won the match in four games 25-30, 30-18, 30-15, 30-27. Gonzaga will conclude its regular season schedule next Saturday night at Portland.
Gonzaga held control of the first game of the contest as the Zags combined for a .227 team attack percentage compared to only .140 for the Gaels. Both teams finished with 16 kills in the opener, Natasha Kozen and Christina Davis combining for eight of Gonzaga's kills. Rachel Avilla paced the SMC attack with five kills.
Saint Mary's caught fire in games two and three as the Gaels hit over .400 in both games as they cruised to easy victories. Lindsey Bogason came up big for Saint Mary's with 12 kills over the two games. Gonzaga could not overcome eight attack errors of their own in the games, failing to score 20 points in either game. Abby Cullen led the Bulldogs offense in the two games with seven kills.
In the final game both schools traded attacks as Gonzaga rolled out to a 12-9 lead. Saint Mary's responded and moved into a three-point advantage of their own at 23-20. The Bulldogs would end up killing their chances at a late rally as they committed four attack errors over the final stretch.
Bogason led all players with 23 kills while Jill Parmele and Avilla each added 15 kills. The Gaels finished with a .270 team attack percentage. Bogason also finished with six blocks, Stacy OConnor added seven blocks.
Gonzaga was led by Abby Cullen with 16 kills and six blocks. Christina Davis added 10 kills and Heather Signor finished with 11 digs.
