No. 23 Eastern Washington Holds Off Zags Volleyball

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Eastern Washington Eagles (12-0) proved why they are the nation's No. 23 ranked squad on Wednesday as they held off a feisty Gonzaga squad in three games in front of 972 fans at Martin Centre. The Eagles won the contest 30-20, 30-22 and 30-28. Gonzaga falls to 1-8 on the year.
The two teams battled back-and-forth in the opener with the scored tied at 10-10 after attack errors on both squads. Janelle Ruen then served the Eagles to six straight points with Lindsay Page hammering down two kills during the short EWU run. Eastern Washington stretched the lead to 24-15 after back-to-back attack errors on the Bulldogs. Kristy Chester then ended any chance of a Gonzaga rally with a kill at the end.
The teams traded balanced attacks in the second game with Eastern Washington leading 16-15. Gonzaga had trailed 16-13 but closed the gap on kills by Christina Davis and Shawn Paulino. EWU took advantage of six Gonzaga attack errors and Ruen hammered down two kills to give the Eagles a runaway win in the end.
Game three proved to a much harder task for the Eagles as Gonzaga would not go away. EWU led 11-6 and 25-20 before Gonzaga clawed its way back into the game. In each run Abby Cullen had two kills and Christina Davis dumped in a service ace. A service ace by Jessica Herrera gave the Zags a 27-26 advantage and the Zags led 28-27 on another kill by Cullen. Keva Sonderen then hammered down two straight kills and Gonzaga had its 38th attack error of the night on the final point of the match.
Eastern Washington combined for 32 blocks as they defeated Gonzaga for the 11th straight time. Kristy Chester led EWU with nine kills while Lindsay Page had eight blocks. Monica Lynch and Courtney Bush each finished with seven blocks. The Eagles were held to a .167 attack percentage.
Gonzaga was led by Abby Cullen with a match-high 11 kills and two solo blocks. Heather Signor had 11 digs to lead all players. Gonzaga now travels to the Coors Classic in Fort Collins, Colorado.
