Montana Roars Past Volleyball, 3-0

SPOKANE, Wash. - Lizzie Wertz and Whitney Pavlik combined for 27 kills Monday night as the visiting Montana Grizzlies (4-0) downed Gonzaga (0-4) in three straight games at Martin Centre. The Grizzlies won 30-26, 30-27 and 30-19 to win for the seventh straight time over the Bulldogs.
The two teams traded attacks in the first game but Gonzaga could never take the lead as Montana used a late 7-3 run to win the game. Wertz hammered down three kills during the final run after the Bulldogs had closed to 23-22 behind two kills by Christina Davis.
Montana again used a big run midway through the second game as Diana Thompson served the Grizzlies to six straight points and a 20-14 lead. Missy Perry and Christina Davis were able to serve the Zags back into the contest as they tied the game at 26-26 on a kill by Natasha Kozen. Wertz would again come up big for Montana with two kills on the final four plays.
Ashley Gorham and Diana Thompson served the Grizzlies to a 13-4 run to open game three and Montana continued to roll to the victory. Wertz had five kills in the final game while Pavlik also had five kills including three straight during the early Montana run. Gonzaga chipped away at the lead with a four-point run to make it 24-15, Perry having a service ace and Davis two kills.
Wertz led all players with 14 kills and 12 digs. Pavlik had 13 kills on 28 attacks for a .321 attack percentage. Davis led the Bulldogs with 12 kills and Kari Vagstad had six blocks. Gonzaga returns to action this weekend as they travel to Bozeman, Montana for the Holiday Inn - Montana State Classic.
