Women's Basketball Wraps Up Non-Conference Schedule With Win

SPOKANE, Wash. - Sophomore guard Shannon Mathews led the Gonzaga University Bulldogs (9-6) with 14 points, six rebounds and a career-high 11 assists Wednesday night as the Bulldogs defeated the Eastern Washington Eagles (9-4) 71-64 in non-conference action at the Kennel.
Senior Triana Allen led the Bulldogs in scoring with a game-high 20 points while Raeanna Jewell (14) and Ashley Burke (13) each shot in double figures for the night. Mathews shot 2-for-11 from the field and went a perfect 10-for-10 from the free-throw line while Jewell grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a small lead in the first five minutes as Jewell sank five points in less than a minute to give the Bulldogs the 9-2 advantage with 16:12 remaining. The Eagles answered quickly going on a 14-2 run to take a 19-13 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the first half.
Eastern Washington and Gonzaga continued to battle in the first half, changing leads three times. Mathews sank two good free throws in the last second of the first half to secure the 39-34 halftime advantage for the Bulldogs.
The Eagles made one more surge early in the second half to gain the lead as they took a 44-43 lead on a three-pointer from Stephanie Ulmer. The Bulldogs began to pull away, leading by as much as nine points as Mathews sank six free throws in the last minute to seal the 71-64 victory for the Zags.
Kathleen Nygaard led the Eagles with 19 points and 10 rebounds as Michelle Demetruk and Stephanie Ulmer each scored 12 points.
Gonzaga finished shooting 49.1 percent from the field, 27.3 percent from beyond the arc and 87.5 percent from the free-throw line.
The Bulldogs travel to Malibu, Calif., Friday as they open West Coast Conference play against the Pepperdine Waves at 7 p.m. at the Firestone Fieldhouse.
