SPOKANE, Wash. - Shuree Hyatt scored the winning goal on a half-field breakaway to give the University of San Francisco its first West Coast Conference victory of the season over Gonzaga University on a windy Friday afternoon. The win improved the Dons to 5-9 (1-1 WCC) and dropped the Bulldogs to 8-6 (0-2 WCC) and ended Gonzaga's home-field four match win streak.
San Francisco marked the board first off of a direct free kick taken by Annika Schmidt in the sixth minute of play. Bulldog Ashley Pryor committed a foul just outside the 18-yard box for the Don opportunity. Gonzaga's defense broke down, due to miscommunication, and San Francisco took a 1-0 lead.
Gonzaga evened up the score in the 22nd minute as junior Annie Hawkins took a breakaway from near the half-field mark with one defender shadowing her. Hawkins scored her 11th goal of the season with a low shot past Don goalkeeper Jennifer Orantes.
San Francisco retaliated as Hyatt took a half-field breakaway with one defender to score the winning goal. Hyatt sent the ball past sophomore Bulldog goalkeeper Ashley Haugen for the 2-1 lead. The game would be left scoreless for the remainder of the game.
The statistics board fell lopsided as San Francisco notched 10 shots with one foul, and Gonzaga marked six shots with 10 fouls. The first half of the game was controlled by the Dons, with four corner kicks and all 10 shots happening before the half. The Bulldogs came back in the second half with numerous cross attempts, but could only register three shots in each half with seven corner kicks in the second period.
Gonzaga continues WCC play as it hosts Saint Mary's College at 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon at Martin Field.
