Volleyball Falls In Four To Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University (16-8, 7-2 WCC) had four players reach double-digit kills on Saturday night as the 15th ranked Broncos used a balanced attack to knock off Gonzaga University (3-22, 0-9 WCC) in West Coast Conference volleyball action. The Broncos knocked off Gonzaga for the nineteenth straight time with a 3-1 win. SCU won 30-14, 30-18, 26-30, 30-23.
Santa Clara got off to a quick start in games one and two as Becky Potter and Toni Muratore paced the Broncos attack with 14 kills each. Santa Clara registered 18 kills in game one and 19 kills in game two as they easily dispatched of the Bulldogs.
Gonzaga responded with a game three win as three Bulldogs players heated up. Natasha Kozen led all GU players with 18 kills while Abby Cullen followed with 14 and Christina Davis added 13. All three players had at least 40 attack attempts in the contest with Kozen leading the team with 57 swings.
In the final game Santa Clara rebounded with 17 kills while limiting Gonzaga to a .061 attack percentage. Cassie Perret and Becky Biniek added 10 kills each to round out the Broncos players with double digit kills. Perret and Potter also had 17 digs each to lead SCU. Heather Signor had 13 in the losing cause for GU.
The Bulldogs return to volleyball action next weekend when they host San Francisco and Saint Mary's. The Saturday game with Saint Mary's has been moved to a later start to accommodate the men's basketball exhibition. Start time is scheduled for around 8:30 p.m.
