MCMINNVILE, Ore. - The Gonzaga University Bulldogs bounced Linfield 5-2, handing the Wildcats their first setback in seven weeks while ending the Wildcats' eight-match win steak. Winning had become a habit for the Wildcats, whose last defeat was to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Feb. 9.
Bryce Cooper and Drew Ernst jumpstarted the Bulldogs as thy defeated Tim Layman and Erik Janssen 8-5 in No. 1 doubles. Linfield's Justin Greene and Nick Baker claimed the No. 2 doubles match with an 8-6 victory over Reid Arthur and Robert Penney. Gonzaga rebounded in the third match to claim the point as Shaun Whitney and Brendan Cunningham downed Chris Rivera and Brian Mullin 8-3.
Gonzaga earned the win with victoris in four of six singles matches. Cooper defeated Layman 7-5, 6-1 at No. 1, while Arthur downed Greene 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3. Ernst claimed the fourth match 6-4, 6-3 over Rivera. Baker forced a tie-breaker at No. 5 before losing 7-6 (3), 6-3 to Robert Penney.
The Bulldogs head to the University of Montana Saturday before hosting the Eastern Washington Univeristy Eagles at the Martin Tennis Courts Saturday, April 5.
