SAN DIEGO - The Gonzaga University men's varsity crew put together their second strong day on the water as Mission Bay as they won the Cal Cup Grand Final at the 2003 San Diego Crew Classic. The Gonzaga women also advanced to the Cal Cup Grand Final, finishing sixth on Sunday afternoon. Gonzaga will return to racing action in two weeks with a regatta at Western Washington.
The men drew a good lane assignment after winning their heat race on Saturday. The Bulldog men covered the 2,000 meter course in a time of 6:16.80 to edge the University of Massachusetts with a two late strokes. UMass finished second at 6:17.34. The University of Minnesota finished third in the race after finishing second to Gonzaga on Saturday.
The Gonzaga men's varsity 8 consisted of coxswain Elaine Parry, Mark Voorhees, Pat Haffey, Connor Barry, Nathan Wilson, Ben Foley, Jeff Keily, Brad Hughes and Mike Baisch.
Gonzaga's women did not fair as well as they were handed an outside lane in the Bay and fought through chopping conditions to finish in sixth place in the Cal Cup Grand Final. The team had finished second in their heat race on Saturday behind WCC foe Loyola Marymount. Gonzaga had a time of 7:03.75 on the 2,000 meter course. The University of West Virginia won the Cal Cup Grand Final with a time of 6:57.0, a half a second ahead of LMU.
The Gonzaga women's varsity 8 consisted of coxswain Courtney Haase, Cynthia Savoca, Maria Bokulich, Renee Holl, Jenifer Gehlsen, Breah Neimiec, Karen O'Hagan, Kristi Aamodt and Bridget Troy.
