LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Icelandic connection of Kari Arnason and Arni Ingi Pjetursson connected at the 75:25 mark Friday evening to give Gonzaga University's men's soccer team a 1-1 double-overtime tie with the University of New Mexico in the opening match of the UNLV/FILA Classic.
The inaugural meeting between the two teams saw the Lobos (3-3-3) take a 1-0 lead at 51:43 when Stian Eriksen of Asker, Norway, blasted a shot from the top of the box past Bulldog (4-3-1) keeper Vito Higgins.
But Arnason and Pjetursson, who both hail from Reykjavik, drew Gonzaga even when Arnason took his fellow countryman's pass and caught the left post on a right-to-left shot. It was Aranson's third goal of the season and third goal in the last two matches. He also had an assist last week to give him 7 points in his last two outings.
The Lobos held a 2-1 margin in shots over the Bulldogs, 11 of UNM's 26 shots on goal compared to five of Gonzaga's 13 shots. Neither team had a shot in the first overtime period, and UNM held a 3-1 edge in the second OT. Higgins had 10 saves, all in regulation, while Lobos keeper Andrew Weber had four saves, three in the second half and one in the second overtime.
In somewhat of a soccer rarity, Gonzaga did not have a corner kick while UNM had nine such chances. Gonzaga was whistled for 23 fouls to 10 by the Lobos.
The Bulldogs will meet host UNLV on Sunday at noon. UNLV met Cal State Northridge in Friday's late match. Cal State Northridge will meet UNM in Sunday's finale.
