SPOKANE, Wash. -The Gonzaga University men's tennis team turned in another strong performance Saturday at the Bulldog Classic as GU dominated the doubles play, saw two advance to the semifinals round in the singles competition and had two advance to the semifinals round in the backdraw competition.
In day two of singles play it was the Gonzaga Cooper connection of junior Bryce Cooper and freshman Cooper Fratt who picked up wins to advance to the semifinals round. Cooper defeated Eastern Washington University's Andrew Cohe 6-1, 6-2. Fratt advanced to the semifinals by defeating Lewis-Clark State College's Zach Stotland in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.
In other singles action the Bulldogs had freshman Marco Pineda defeat his teammate Robert Penney 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. Pineda would then drop his next match to EWU's Kevin Erickson 6-1, 6-2.
The Zags dominated play in the doubles opening round as all four Gonzaga doubles teams picked up wins. The team of Cooper/Ernst defeated LCSC's Zaslow/Hunt 9-7. GU's Penney/Goldsmith downed EWU's Davis/Garfield 9-8. The tandem of Azuma/Pineta took out EWU's Cohe/Erickson 8-5 and the team of Fratt/Arthur defeated EWU's Heier/Hair 8-2.
In the backdraw matches Gonzaga had two players advance on to the semifinals round. Junior Reid Arthur defeated LCSC's Hunt in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 in the first round and in round two he downed EWU's Eric Eggers 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. Senior Dru Ernst defeated EWU's Jonathan Davis in the first round in straight sets 7-5, 6-2 and in round two he handed EWU's Brandon Hair a loss in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.
The Bulldog Classic will conclude on Sunday at 9 a.m. with the semifinals and finals round of singles. The remaining rounds of the backdraw and doubles will be played at a later date.
