PALO ALTO, Calif. -The Gonzaga University men's tennis team recorded three wins in the opening day of play at the ITA Regionals hosted by the University of California, Berkeley Friday in Palo Alto, Calif.

In the first round of singles play GU picked up three wins and dropped three matches. Senior Dru Ernst picked up one of GU's first round wins as he defeated Sacramento State University's William McAlister, 7-6, 6-2. Junior Reid Arthur advanced to the second round of play by handing Cal Poly San Luis Obispo University's Sean May a straight sets loss, 6-3, 6-3. GU's final win came when freshman Marco Pineda defeated the University of San Francisco's Axel Elvik in straight sets 7-6, 6-3.

The Bulldogs three losses in the first round came when junior Bryce Cooper was defeated by the University of Nevada, Reno's Adam Jooste, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. Freshman Cooper Fratt was defeated by Sacramento State's Junaid Hussain, 6-3, 6-3. Sophomore Brett Womack was defeated by Cal's Patrick Briavd, 6-1, 6-1.

Round two of singles play saw the Bulldogs drop all three matches. Ernst was defeated by Stanford University's James Wan, 6-3, 6-2, Arthur was handed a loss by Cal's Daniel Sebescen, 6-7, 6-2 and Pineda was defeated by the University of Oregon's Steve Swinnen, 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles play GU's three teams competing were all defeated in the first round. The team of Cooper/Fratt were defeated by Fresno State University's Jakub Cech and Sam Tadevosian, 8-5. GU's duo of Dru Ernst and Pineda were handed a loss by the University of Hawaii's Dilibor Ptak and Ryan Sceats, 8-3. The final GU tandem of Womack/Arthur were defeated by the University of California, Davis' Casey McMakin and Jordan Combs, 8-1.

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Saturday at 8 a.m. as they compete in the consolation bracket at the ITA Regionals.
