SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Gonzaga University men's tennis team was swept by University of California, Santa Cruz, 7-0, on Wednesday afternoon during its California road trip. With the loss, the Bulldogs find themselves on a seven game losing streak with a 4-10 season record.
UC Santa Cruz took control of the match early with a clean sweep of all three doubles matches. Bryce Cooper and Dru Ernst teamed up for Gonzaga to take Kellen Ali-Christie and Matt Brunner to a tiebreaker set, but lost 9-8 (7-4). Brett Womack and Reid Arthur lost to Shane Templeman and Matt Seeberger, 8-5, while Jesse Goldsmith and Robert Penney fell to Brian Casey and Andrew Cohen, 8-3.
Singles play fell the same way for the Bulldogs as UC Santa Cruz won each match in straight sets. Cooper was defeated by Casey in the No. 1 slot (6-0, 6-4), as was Ernst, Womack, Arthur, Penney and Goldsmith.
Thursday's match against Cal Poly was cancelled, but the men continue their road trip as they travel to University of Nevada, Reno on Friday, March 12.
