Women's Tennis Knocks Off Eastern, 7-0

SPOKANE, Wash. - Despite a 40-minute rain delay, the Gonzaga University women's tennis team defeated Eastern Washington University for the third time this season with the 7-0 sweep. The Bulldogs also swept the Eagles in their first meeting in November. With the win, Gonzaga improved to 9-11 while Eastern dropped to 0-12.
The Bulldogs took care of all three doubles matches as Jamie Buterbaugh and Angela Fry won the No. 1 doubles match against Leanna Mehren and Kim Cabiling, 8-4. Leigh Orne and Sirrah Williams followed in suit, picking up an 8-2 win over Jennifer Jolley and Teri Sherrill at No. 2 and Katie Sanders and Florence Wasko rounded out the sweep against Leslie Lidell and Marie Carroll with an 8-4 score.
Singles play also fared well with Gonzaga controlling all six matches. Buterbaugh took care of Cabiling in the No. 1 spot with a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Fry defeated Jolley (6-0, 6-4), Orne defeated Carroll (6-3, 7-5), Williams defeated Mehren (6-2, 6-4), Sanders defeated Sherrill (6-3, 6-4) and Connie Head won the No. 6 spot with a victory over Wanda Garcia (6-3, 6-3) for the Bulldog sweep.
Gonzaga heads out on the road to take on University of Montana in Missoula, Mont., at 1 p.m. (PST) on Friday, April 16, before the Bulldogs return home to host Lewis-Clark State College in the last home match of the season on Saturday, April 17 at 11 a.m.
