BOISE, Ida. - The Gonzaga University volleyball team picked up its first win of the 2004 on Saturday night as the Bulldogs knocked off Weber State University, 3-1, in the final match of the DoubleTree Club Bronco Invitational in Boise. Gonzaga improved to 1-3 on the season winning the match over the Wildcats 30-27, 28-30, 30-24 and 30-19. Earlier in the day New Mexico State University defeated Gonzaga in four games by scores fo 30-22, 30-23, 27-30, 30-19. Lacey Bell led the Bulldogs attack against WSU as the junior right-side hitter collected 18 kills as Gonzaga combined for a .267 attack percentage. Bell was one of four Gonzaga players to reach double-digit kills as Lauren Armas (15), Becky Jones (12) and Christina Davis (11) all chipped in with double digits. Armas was a force at the net for the Bulldogs with six blocks while Davis has the hot hand on serve finishing with four aces. The match was delayed by a 30-minute fire alarm during the Bulldogs 30-19 game four victory. The delay did not seem to hurt the Zags offense as they finished that game with a .282 attack clip, one of three games in the match in which they finished with higher than a .200 attack percentage. Ashley Henry led the Wildcats with 11 kills while Kolbie Murphey had 10 kills and 7 blocks. Earlier in the day New Mexico State used a solid defensive effort to stonewall the Bulldogs in a four-game win. The Aggies combined for 24 blocks including a match-high seven by Kristin Hendrichs as they limited Gonzaga to a .107 attack percentage. Armas again was a force for the Bulldogs offense as she finished with a team-high 16 kills. Davis was right behind Armas on the offensive attack finishing with 15 kills. Freshman Briawna Mueller was the most effective Gonzaga attacker with seven kills for a .462 attack percentage. New Mexico State was led by Stevi Adams with 19 kills and a .326 attack percentage. Alice Borden was even more deadly on the attack leading NMSU with a .550 attack percentage and 13 kills. Gonzaga returns to action on Thursday night when they host nationally ranked Colorado State University at 7 p.m. in Martin Centre. Following that match Gonzaga will travel to Portland to play in the Portland State Volleyball Showcase on Friday and Saturday. Gonzaga will square off with host Portland State University, University of Northern Colorado and University of Oregon in the event.
