Jan. 22, 2005

EUGENE, Ore. -The Gonzaga University men's tennis team opened the spring season with a 7-0 loss to the Ducks of the University of Oregon Saturday morning at the Student Tennis Center in Eugene, Ore.

Oregon took the lead early, capturing the doubles point. All the GU doubles teams struggled in the early going but the duo of junior Bryce Cooper and sophomore Brett Womack battled closely with the Ducks' tandem of freshman Chris Liao and senior Chad Wilson but came up short as they lost the match 9-7.

The bright spot of the day for the Bulldogs in singles competition was in the No. 1 slot when Cooper took the first set from Oregon's Manuel Kost to hold the early advantage. Cooper then dropped the next two sets and lost match 3-6, 6-3, 10-4. The remainder of the singles play for Gonzaga was decided in straight sets with GU on the losing end of all five.

The men will head back on the road on Sunday, Jan. 30 as they travel to meet Lewis-Clark State in Lewiston, Idaho. The match is slated to begin at 12:00 p.m.
