Men's Tennis Continues Play at GU/EWU Tournament

CHENEY, Wash. - The Gonzaga University men's tennis team continued play at the Gonzaga/Eastern Washington University Tournament on Friday with Cooper Fratt, Mike Merz and Marco Pineda all picking up singles wins.

In the first flight of singles play, Fratt scored GU's first singles win, but it didn't come easily. Fratt dropped the first set 6-4 to the University of Idaho's Anthony Karloyle. Fratt found himself back on even playing terms with Karloyle after taking the second set 6-4. The sophomore then dug in and was able to hand Karoyle a defeat taking the final set 10-4. Fratt was then defeated in the second round by EWU's Kyle Schraeder in straight sets 6-3, 6-0.

GU's two other competitors in the first flight, Reid Arthur and Brett Womack, were defeated in the first round, but both competitors didn't go down without a fight. Arthur dropped his first set 7-6 (7-5) to UI's Tim Huynh, then battled to a tough 6-4 loss in the second set. Womack was defeated by Scott Kennel of the University of Portland. Kennel took the first set 7-6, but Womack evened the score taking the second set 7-6. The two then engaged in a battle for the third set with Kennel defeating Womack 12-10.

In the second flight, GU picked up two first round wins as freshman Merz defeated the University of Montana's Doug Shryock in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3). Merz was then defeated in the second round by the University of Montana's Brady Tommerup, 4-6, 6-4, 10-3. Pineda continued the momentum for the Bulldogs in flight two as he defeated Kyle Cruzat of EWU. These two engaged in a tough battle with Cruzat taking the first set 7-5, but Pineda battled back to even things at one set apiece taking the second set 6-1. Pineda dug in and came out victorious with a 10-8 win in the third and final set. Pineda then fell in the second round to UM's Colin Dektar, 6-3, 7-5.

The third flight saw freshman Kyle Baltrusch fall to EWU's Chad Turner in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. Logan Napolsky advanced on to the second round receiving a bye in the first round and will play on Saturday.

In doubles action, the GU teams of Fratt and Robert Penney and Arthur and Napolsky received first round byes. Fratt and Penney were defeated in the second round by EWU's Johnathan Davis and Cruzat, 9-8. Arthur and Napolsky picked up a win as they downed UM's Tommerup and Alex Hart, 8-5. GU's third team of Pineda and Womack, who picked up a doubles in on Thursday, were defeated in the second round by UM's Varun Giri and Doug Shryock, 8-5.

In the third round of doubles Arthur and Napolsky were defeated by UM's Giri and Shryock, 8-5.

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Saturday as they close out play in the Gonzaga/Eastern Washington Tournament in Cheney, Wash.
